Since November I have been working at Bruce Power. Not many people get to actually see the inside of such a massive place. (well unless you work there - which by the way, Bruce Power employs over 4000 people) I'm working in the engineering department as a document control tech. My main responsibility is knowing the where abouts of over 2500 documents at any given time anywhere in the plant. I can't say that I love my job, but for now, it's a stepping stone. Jay on the other hand is madly in love with his. What's not to love?
The plant is situated on Lake Huron and it's a beautiful spot for wildlife - turkeys, fox, deer, coyotes, and a few bald eagles.
The above pics tell a small tale of what goes on inside. The two orange guys above are elecricians. Not your typical run of the mill-lets-build-a-house-electricians, these guys work in extreme high voltage areas. Which is why one guy is equipped with a life saving device. The next guy is working on the face of the reactor. Each of those little round things are called fuel bundles. There are 35 rods per bundle and each reactor has 411 bundles. There are 8 units/or/8 reactors. The turbine floor as shown in the last pic is only 1/2 of the operating plant. The yellow things are called turbines. They run on over 1 million horse power (each), and if you are standing next to one of them they are about the size of 4 transport trucks. (just so you can get an idea of how big they are)
Jay doesn't work on the same side of the plant as I do. He's at Bruce B - I'm at A. Both plants are mirror images of each other - just 3km apart. Each plant has 4 units.
It's a pretty amazing place and next time you're up visiting us, you should take a tour from the visitor's centre.
